Icon coffee takes its name from the building it’s housed in, an 18 storey apartment tower located at St Kilda Road junction. Much like the busy junction, Icon is where modern architecture and art intersect, and has actually been described as Melbourne’s livable Lego tower. This iconic structure is made up of asymmetrically layered cubes, that flaunts a kaleidoscope of colours.
The cafe design is simple yet sophisticated, both aesthetically pleasing, yet uncomplicated. The room has an airy feel, and is saturated in natural sunlight from the large glass walls, which offer a view that contrasts the soothing ambiance within. I sat watching the peak hour traffic filter through St Kilda junction, while listening to the soothing tunes playing in the background, and inhaling the sweet smell of coffee grinding through the Mythos.
The sleek 2 group La Marzocco Linea still extracts espresso daily, and Clever drippers brew filter coffee.
Icon was sold to new owners earlier this year, so Jareds absence was the most salient point of difference to the last time I was here. They now use coffee roasted by Mycuppa, and my long black was made using the house blend. My cup had a full body, with intense dark chocolate notes.
