They say you learn something new every day. Today I learnt that Smak is Norwegian for taste. It’s also the name Tom Fissenden and Callum Ellis christened their South Yarra food house with. It’s veiled behind Chapel Street in South Yarra, and focuses on simplicity and taste; both in food, and in style. 

Designed by Studio Ole, the venue has a Scandinavian inspired interior, with scattered greenery in the form of a cacti corner and green wall, and lots of raw materials that echoes what goes on within the kitchen. 

The menu focused on sustainable and nutritious food that actually tastes delicious, from breakfast through to dinner. A sample of the menu includes Silverbeet & Leek Fritters, Buckwheat Matcha Crepes with berry ricotta, lemon curd, lime-coconut sorbet & olive oil emulsion, Orange Poached Beetroot, Pumpkin and Tofu Stew, and 12 Hour Juniper Berry Braised Lamb. They also have a selection of protein dishes, smoothies, and nutrient packed juices for the avid gym junkie needing a pre-workout boost.

Coffee is from Seven Seeds, and their single origin of the day was a Pulped Natural Brazilian. This Red Catuai from the Bahia region made for a rich long black, with sweet nougat notes, and Nutella like flavours.
