Rock Paper Scissors

Childhood memories of playing Rock-paper-scissors with my brother on long road trips came flooding back when I heard the name of this new cafe. I always played the rock, hoping to crush my brother’s scissors, but inevitably was covered by his flat handed paper. Yes, I was that predictable. I suppose I’m still as predictable now as I was as a child, and many of you won’t be surprised to find me revisiting a cafe that I visited 6 months ago (when it first opened).

Located on Rouse Street, just off the main strip in Port Melbourne, you certainly will be roused by the coffee flowing through the Spirit espresso machine. 

Rock Paper Scissors has an airy feel, which is accentuated by its clean white walls, glossy white tiled counter, and scattered greenery. The dining area is spacious, seating up to 85 people, and dotted with tables decorated with freshly cut flowers. The window frontage allows an abundance of natural light to flow into the venue, which when fully opened, provide both ventilation, and an unobstructed view of the blue sky outside.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the owner Zack today, who has been in the hospitality industry long enough to know how to run a quality driven cafe. His previous ventures include Hawthorn’s Social Glutton, & St Kilda’s Waldorf Diner. Zack’s choice of coffee was motivated by previous experience with Toby’s Estate, who have consistently provided him with specialty coffee, and service to match.

The Menu is plentiful, and offers an array of scrumptious meals, such as Buttermilk pancakes with grilled banana, strawberries, shaved honeycomb, & topped with double cream, and the ‘Pumpkin Bliss’, with roasted pumpkin, baby spinach, goats cheese, and poached eggs. Lunch options include House made Risotto, Chicken & Chorizo salad, and the Angus Beef Burger with hand cut chips.  They also do a Nutella ‘freak shake’, if you dare! Bring an extra-large appetite, as well as a super sweet tooth for this one. It’s epic!

Coffee is roasted by Toby’s Estate, with the Brunswick blend in the Nuova Simonelli Mythos One. My long back had a well-rounded body, with hazelnut notes.

Pumpkin Bliss- Roasted pumpkin with baby spinach, goats cheese, soft herbs, and poached eggs on toasted sourdough.
