Amidst all the fashion boutiques on Chapel Street, there’s a hidden gem of a cafe, with a fitting name- Lucky Penny. Fitting because you will think you’re in luck finding specialty coffee in such a beautifully designed space.
Lucky Penny was recently taken over by Tavis, formerly at South Yarra venues like Cafe Sienna & La Camera, and he has definitely put down his roots since his arrival 3 months ago.
Apart from some menu modifications, and greater emphasis on the large function room upstairs, Lucky Penny still has the stylish vibe that fits right into Chapel Street.
The decor has a gorgeous Scandinavian feel, with rustic white brick walls, reclaimed timber shelves and coffee bar, country style spindle back chairs, and warm lighting. It’s not only clean and welcoming, but the color scheme doesn’t overwhelm the senses- which is a blessing first thing in the morning.
The menu focuses on locally sourced produce, and a selection of breakfast, lunch, and snack options. Breakfast includes Waffles with whipped pumpkin cream & toasted pecans, Beetroot Vodka cured Tasmanian Salmon, and Tennessee Waffles with popcorn chicken. Lunch offerings include Lemon Thyme Chicken, and the Vegan friendly Pumpkin Lentil Burger. There’s also a range of healthy bowls, such as the Power Bowl with black beans, avocado, kale, sweet potato, and sour cream.
Coffee is from Axil, and their Seasonal blend was composed of beans from Terra Alta Brazil, El Tambo Colombia, and Mi Tierra El Salvador. My espresso had a smooth body, with creamy caramel notes.
