Feeling Smug

Smug Relish is the latest addition to Lygon Street, Brunswick. This 7 month old café sits across from the vintage market of Lost & Found, and occupies two adjoining shops. The man behind this spot is Kumar; a Nepalese migrant who came to Australia in 2009. Since his arrival, Kumar has trained as an Italian chef, and developed a passion for organic food, and sharing nutritious dishes. He has designed the café, and built the furnishings from repurposed timber pallets.

Kumar explained that all ingredients used at the cafe are either locally sourced or house made, and organic. Their menu features lots of vegan and or vegetarian options, and includes the Zucchini hash with kale & quinoa salad, Italian Omelette, Ham, cannellini, and baked eggs with truffle oil & chili jam, Urid Split savory pancakes with beetroot sauce & couscous, and Tofu Burgers with grilled vegetables.

Coffee is from St Ali, and their house blend is made up of 60% Colombia Condor Pitalito & 40% Brazil Sertãozinho Red Bourbon. My long black had huge caramel notes, with a rich body.

It’s evident that the Smug Relish team take pride in their café, and share it with great gusto.
