The chicks of Moonee Ponds have worked out their pecking order, and Brother Hen takes pole position in the café game.
Brother Hen takes its name from the pet chicken out in the courtyard. Yes, a café with real chickens, not just on the menu, but live and kicking outside in a purpose built coop. They courtyard also features a veggie patch, where everything from zucchinis and tomatoes through to herbs are grown and then used in the kitchen.
Inside, you’ll find an airy café lined with polished floorboards, and spread over two separate dining areas. The vibrant yellow FB70 extracted coffee from Allpress, and the side kitchen cooks up Mediterranean inspired breakfast and lunch dishes. The All-day menu features Spanish Baked Eggs with chorizo ragu, Nonna Hens Peperonata, Nutella and Oreo French Toast, and Soft Shell Crab burger with sweet potato wedges. For the little hatchlings, there’s Waffles with ice-cream, Ham & cheese toasties, and Eggs on toast.
I sat out in the fresh air, surrounded by the sounds of vocal hens, and the aroma of fresh basil, and enjoyed a long black that had a bold body, with cocoa notes.
A couple of chefs, a few chooks, and a Brother that thinks he’s a Hen… These guys rule the roost in Moonee Ponds.
