Just what the Doctor ordered!
Back in 2014 I visited Jr Morse, which was just a coffee window at the time. I sat on the milk crate sipping an espresso shot in the sun, while commuters rushed to the Victoria Park train station. Two years on, and this small window is now a café/bar/beer garden.
Interestingly, the venue is named after the Dr Morse Indigestion Company, which operated in the building back at the beginning of the 20th century.
The building’s interior features exposed red brick walls, two open fireplaces, floor boards, and banquette seating just below the original “Indian Root Pills” wall mural. The back area is dimly lit, and perfect for those evening nightcaps in front of the open fire; while the beet garden is sunlit, and decked out with greenery.
An obvious tribute to the former remedial specialist occupants, was the “For Blood Purification” heading under the drinks menu.
I sat at the front window, looking out onto Johnston Street while sipping my blood purifying coffee, which was roasted by ONA in Canberra. Their El Salvadorian single origin made for a full bodied cup, with stewed apple notes.
Besides coffee, the bar also serves local beer on tap, spirits, wines, and a selection of cocktails, for instance the “Grape Expectation”, “Figgie Smalls”, and “Alpha Papa”.
The Menu features flavoursome Breakfast and Lunch options, such as Corn & Chilli fritters with spicy hollandaise, Vegan Ma-Po tofu with stir fried mushrooms on roti, and Banana spring rolls with honeycomb cream and lemon grass syrup. They also have a curry of the week option, a Korean fried chicken wrap with kimchi, cheese burgers with chips, and Crispy Duck with salad greens.
Dr Morse opens til 1am on weekends, and 11pm weekdays.
