I paid Crux & Co a visit today, which is located opposite the Kettle Black on Albert Road, South Melbourne.
The friendly staff told me they have Brunetti’s former head chef, Louis, who crafts all the colourful pastries in the large glass cabinet.
Breakfast is served all day here, and there is plenty of room for diners to sit and enjoy the well designed space. The menu features Polenta Concia with chargrilled squid ink garlic toast; Brisque benedict with tiger prawns; and Smoked salmon & Ricotta on house made croissant.
Lunch options includes Scotch quail egg, arancini, falafel served on a potato roesti nest; Teriyaki tofu and grilled chicken tenders; and Humita served with guacamole, quinoa arepas, and stewed beans.
All the pastrys are made in house, and the cabinet is filled with green tea croissants, crogles, macarons, eclairs, petit gateau, and a selection of slices. They even do beef pies, sausage rolls, and croque monsieurs!
Coffee is from Five Senses and Maker Fine, with the Hi Fidelity blend for white coffee, and rotating espresso and filter options. I enjoyed the Maven, aka. El Penol, an offering from the Antioquia region of Colombia, which was grown at around 1950 meters above sea level. It’s a fully washed Caturra & Castillo varietal, and as a long black has stonefruit highlights, with toffee sweetness.
