One half of the Gardiner and Field duo has made the move to Prahran, and opened up his own café on busy High Street. Jesse Feldy eyed off this space at the bottom of an apartment complex for over 6 months, and thought it was an ideal location to open his own café. The name ‘Club Social’ was inspired by biscuits he ate while traveling around South America; and seemed fitting in light of the fact that he wanted to create a social club feel, with a local community vibe. This particular section of Prahran seemed untapped when it came to Specialty coffee, so Jess has brought all his best coffee gear with him, including a brand new Synesso MVP, ek43, and measuring tools to ensure consistency in every shot. It’s a good thing he lives around the corner; a mere 200 meters away, so he gets in early to dial in his Symmetry house blend, and rotating single origins.
With the help of Ashlee Bennett from Hanem Studio, and the boys from All Round Building Solutions, Jesse converted an empty shell into a bright modern space. Speaking of shells, a key feature of the interior is a fried egg neon light, which is very Melbourne, and a tribute to the staple ingredient of Melbourne breakfast. The venue has an outdoor courtyard with white wire chairs, timber decking, and blue awnings. Inside is well lit, designed mainly on the theme of the monochromatic colour scheme, with dark timber furnishings that contrast the white walls. It’s both aesthetically pleasing, and functional, with an open kitchen, and L shaped coffee bar that allows customers to communicate with the barista from every angle.
Coffee is roasted by Symmetry (formerly known at the Maling Room), and the house blend is both smooth and sweet, with hints of chocolate and caramel. Jesse also offers a rotating single origin bean, which is currently from Ethiopia. I enjoyed a long black made from a natural processed heirloom lot from the Yirgacheffe region, which had berry notes, and a rich body.
The menu is fresh and healthy, with pastries from Noisette. For those on the run, there are freshly made prosciutto and provolone croissants, and both sweet and savoury muffins on the front counter. In line with the current health conscious trends around Melbourne, the menu features golden grind turmeric lattes, matcha lattes, and a selection of teas. Breakfast includes Eggs your way on Rye of Sourdough; Chai and honey stewed fruit bowls; and the Breakfast ramen with shichimi togarashi in tonkotsu broth.
All day options include Smorrebrod on rye with smoked herring, goats curd, avocado and egg;
Sautéed warm greens with pomegranate molasses; Silken soy and vanilla beans hotcakes; Black rice nasi goreng; and King crab benedict on brioche.
Club Social may have only opened this week, but it already has the feel of a place where locals can meet, grab a coffee, and have a chin wag with local resident and all round nice guy, Jesse Feldy. His magnetic personality served him well in Malvern, and should see him fit right in at Prahran.
