I remember visiting Sonam Sherpa’s previous popup café, Placeholder, on Smith Street back in 2014, where he and Sam King (Now at Kettle Black), presented us with a laid back spot to grab a coffee. With the unveiling of Shopfront a year ago, located literally around the corner from Placeholders former spot, Sonam has reinvented that laid back coffee bar.
The interior is clean and unobtrusive, with a single banquette at the front window, a trusty La Marzocco Linea PB pumping out espresso on the front bar, and a Behmor brewing up filter coffee on the back counter. They also have pastries and treats from Loafer, and Doughnuts from All Day Donuts on Fridays; as well as Granola for those needing a quick bite.
Coffee is from Wood & Co, with a house blend for espresso, and an Ethiopian Gelana Abaya, for Batch Brew. I went for the batch brew, which tasted like lemon candy, and had a pleasant floral aroma.
