Phase One is the latest venture for Sonam Sherpa, located at Neometro’s newest project, The New Urban Village. This development site is still until construction, and will feature energy efficient apartments, bike paths, performance areas, and a public art space. Sonam has proven he knows how to lure the crowds with quality coffee, both at his former pop up space, Placeholder, and his Victoria Street café Shopfront, which I visited last week. While the New Urban Village is under construction, Sonam will help fuel the social hub at this first phase. The clean compact space was designed by Clare Cousins Architects, and looks out onto the a community garden.
Coffee is extracted via a La Marzocco Linea PB, as well as 2 Behmor brewers. Alec was behind the La Marzocco this morning, who has previously worked at Kettle Black and Mammoth. He extracted a stellar long black using their house blend, Twin Peaks, which is roasted by Wood & Co. Made up of 50% Ethiopian Konga and 50% Colombian El Miradiano, my long black was well balanced, with toffee sweetness. Today’s single origin was a Kenyan from Maker Fine Coffee, which had sweet fruit tones.
A selection of small bites are available, such as Bagels from 5 & Dime, and Pastries from Loafer. They’ll also have soups to warm commuters up on these bitterly cold winter mornings, as well as a selection of toasties.
What better way to bring the community together, and create a sense of belonging, than a well run cafe. All the best to Sonam and his team, who work tirelessly to keep us well caffeinated, and serves as a constant reminder that great ideas can become a reality.
