Mammoth is the brainchild of Jamie McBride, formerly of Touchwood, and the husband of the owner of Northcote’s much loved Barry. This family is known as powerhouse in Melbourne’s cafe scene, with links to BAWA in Hawthorn, and Square & Compass in East Melbourne. Mammoth is true to its word, and since its inception September last year, has been a colossal endeavour. This corner establishment in Armadale was previously home to Treat cafe. It had a full renovation, and boasts a more contemporary edge. The name is actually taken from the Mammoth Mountain in California, home to a large picturesque ski area.
Designed by Techne Architects, the brick walls have been freshly painted white, and a large pale timber bench with a feature stone top, sits centrally in this large open space. Extending from it is the coffee counter, which houses a 3 group Synesso, 2 Mythos One grinders, and an EK43. Spindle back chairs accentuate Mammoths modern Scandinavian vibe.
The menu is extensive, and as stylish as this well designed venue. Tempting options include Chocolate Fondant wagon wheel hotcakes; Turmeric Eggs with royal blue potato skins; Avocado Pesto with buckwheat salad; and the Doughnut Burger with Chicken katsu, green mango & papaya slaw, and cucumber jam.
Coffee is roasted by Five Senses, and today’s Single Origin was the Yirgzero.
This washed Ethiopian was clean with juicy tangerine and lime notes.
