Situated on busy Malvern Road, sits a quintessentially Italian style espresso bar. From the moment I stepped through the front door, I felt as though I had landed in Rome. The barista had the same accent as my Italian cousin who visited Australia for the first time last year, and greeted me with a ‘buongiorno signorina’. Background music was a blend of Italian folk tunes, and modern Italian pop; and the aroma of freshly roasted coffee permeated the air.
The room is lined with timber benches, and warmly lit by pendant lights. The rustic brick walls are adorned with recycled timber shelves, which are well stocked with bottles of limonata, jars of ‘Cioccolato’ spread, and blocks of artisan chocolate imported from Tuscany.
A two group Kees van der Westen Spirit sits proudly atop the geometrically tiled counter, and extracts Slitti coffee, which is roasted in Tuscany. Its that traditional Italian style espresso, black as night, and strong enough to wake the dead.
The menu features a selection of Panini, Focacce, & Insalates, made with customary Italian ingredients like Prosciutto, Buffalo Mozzarella, and Mild Salami. Its a menu that would warm the cockles of my nonnas heart.
Bravo, Officine Zero. A slice of Italy, at Prahrans doorstep.
