Dumbo

I took a trip out west this week to see Dumbo. No no, not the nostalgic Disney film about a circus elephant. It’s a 6 week old café hidden in the backstreets of West Footscray. I must say, I did drive through a suburb covered in red white and blue; following the recent once in 62 year Western Bulldogs AFL premiership win.  Once I arrived at Dumbo, the first thing I noticed was the primary school next door, and all the mums and kids queuing at the express window for a hot chocolate before school. The cafes name was inspired by New York’s Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass neighbourhood; which much like Footscray, was originally an industrial area, but in recent years have developed into a cultural hub.

With the help of his partner, Owner Liam transformed what once was an old Milk bar, into a Scandinavian inspired fit out, with west facing windows that allow an abundance of natural light to filter into the dining area. The main coffee bar and floors are made from raw concrete, and lush foliage is scattered around both the dining area and express bar. Dumbo provides staple necessities like coffee and pastries to the local community, has a convenient takeaway window for those on the go, and is also pram and dog friendly.

Coffee is from Rosso, and extracted via a brand new La Marzocco Linea PB.  Their seasonal blend is composed of beans from Colombia, Ethiopia & Indonesia. My long black had a robust body, with dark chocolate notes. Tea Lattes are also available, made with fruit and spices, and serves as an all-natural colourful caffeine alternative, that’s sugar free. Flavours include the Strawberry Swoon latte with hibiscus, rosehip, strawberries, apple, and beetroot; and Matcha with peppermint latte. Being next door to a primary school, they do offer malted milk, babychinos, hot chocolates with 100s and 1000s, and even traditional spiders (aka. ice cream float)

Chef Ray Le is head of the kitchen, and comes to Dumbo from Common Galaxia in Seddon. The menu changes seasonally, and current breakfast options include Ricotta donuts with caramelised banana, cocoa custard & poached rhubarb; Eggs Benedict with grandma ham and hollandaise; Avocado with heirloom tomatoes, Goats cheese & house made almond dukkah on sourdough; and Baked Moroccan lamb clay pot. Lunch includes Pearl couscous salad with blackened chicken & green pepper relish; and the Brioche burger with chorizo patty, caramelised onion, and double smoked bacon.

In the words of Walt Disney’s Dumbo…. Don’t just fly, soar.
