I’m usually drawn to a café based on the coffee. No, actually, I’m always enticed by the coffee on offer. However, a friend of mine, who is a self-confessed floraphile, told me about this gorgeous little spot off the main drag of South Melbourne. The drawcard? Their floral ceiling. Yes. That’s right- it’s like a floating bouquet, which suits the current season, with spring in the air.  This backstreet space was formerly occupied by Freestyle espresso, which had a contrasting interior to the current fit out. What once was black is now white, and what was bare is now filled with flowers. They’ve even changed the espresso machine. The fresh white with floral theme creates a sense of calm, and in such a small space, softens the room. Outside is an inviting courtyard, which is livened up with greenery and natural sunlight filtering from above.

The menu is substantial, with an array of all day options that cater for all dietary requirements. There’s the Buttermilk White chocolate pancakes with fresh figs and berries; Thyme mushrooms with polenta chips and saganaki; Corn fritters with smoked bacon and 2 poached eggs; Paleo pumpkin and spinach loaf with snow pea tendrils; Potato rosti stack with white truffle oil; and a selection of burgers served with sweet potato chips.

Coffee is from Allpress, and their house blend was robust, and perhaps best suited to milk based espresso.
