No it’s not Albert Park’s nomination for Colombia’s beauty pageant. Rather, Miss Colombia pays homage to the former occupants of this large corner venue on Mills Street, Nacional. In view of the fact that Club Atlético Nacional is a popular football club in Colombia, owners Ray & Spiro though Miss Colombia would be fitting to name their first venture. I recognised these charming gentlemen from Bentleigh’s Little Tommy Tucker, and it seems they have taken their prowess to the leafy backstreets of this bayside suburb.
This sizable airy cafe has a contemporary style, with timber wall and counter features, concrete pillars, and bi-fold windows that allow the sea breeze to permeate through the venue.
The menu is based on organic and free range produce, free from preservatives. The all day menu features Melbourne favourites like the smashed avo on toast, and eggs benedict, as well as Banoffee Pancakes with mascarpone and dark chocolate pretzels; Mixed mushrooms & charred spring onion on truffled polenta chips; and seared ocean trout with beetroot and cumin puree.
Coffee is roasted by Dukes, and I enjoyed a Nicaraguan long black. My coffee was sourced from the Las Marias estate in Diplito, where a hybrid varietal known as H3 grows. This is a cross between an Ethiopian heirloom and Caturra varietal, and has been honey processed, hence the coffee beans are dried with some of the mucilage left on them. This results in a wonderfully sweet coffee, with the Las Marias was just that. My cup had rich stewed stone fruit flavours, with dairy chocolate on the finish.
