I finally made it to Brewtown, Newtown’s much loved cafe, roastery, bakery, and retail space with stylish lifestyle pieces from local artisans. Its situated just off busy King Street, in an old 19th century warehouse that once housed the local ambulance service. They actually pay homage to a former superintendent , Henry Abraham (circa 1928), with a framed mirror back sign.
Brewtown is the brainchild of former Toby’s Estate veterans, Simon Triggs and Charles Cameron, and their roaster at the helm, Chris Bonney, also comes to this newtown hot spot from Tobys Estate. The main cafe area downstairs is full of energy and the coffee counter has all the tools to get the best out of the beans, from the custom Kees van der Westen Spirit, to the Alpha Dominche Steampunk.
I enjoyed a short black made from the Finca Santa Teresa Miguel. This honey processed lot from Volcan Panama had the perfect balance between the clarity of a washed processed lot, and the jammy sweet notes of a natural coffee. Its juicy pineapple highlights, complimented its sweet honey finish.
