Hoppa and Joe; a name that many coffee addicts far and wide will understand is a reference to the colloquial terms for two vital components in ones day; the coffee hopper, and a cup of coffee. Without them, my life is incomplete. Without them, Kirsten Taylor wouldn’t have a cafe name. It’s her maiden cafe, after working at the popular South Melbourne patisserie/cafe Chez Dre.
It’s been four months since she opened this corner spot on Heidelberg road, and the locals have already embraced it with open arms. The decor is clean, with blue, white and grey tiles; upholstered royal blue bench seats, and dotted greenery along the wall.
The menu features Dr Marty Crumpets with pepe saya butter; Buttered Shiitake mushrooms on pumpkin bread; Gin cured ocean trout with pickled zucchini and kohlrabi; Cumin rubbed lamb shoulder with Israeli couscous; and classic toasties with double smoked ham and cheese.
Coffee is from the Maling Room, with their Symmetry blend in the hoppers. This seasonal blend makes for a balanced cup, with butterscotch and chocolate tones.
