Walkers Kitchen opened its doors last month, and is the first hospitality venture for siblings Kendy and Nhu. It sits at the bottom of a new office complex in a redeveloped section of Dandenong. Over recent years, Dandenong has become a multicultural hub, and is even home the new Medicare, ATO, and Department of Human services offices. Hence, a large venue that specialises in both coffee and café quality breakfast and lunch, was on the cards. Walkers Kitchen is named after the former name of the street it sits on.
Kendy and Nhu collaborated with the designers at QPA, and created a gorgeous space. The fit out artfully combines greenery, timber, steel and stone. The main counter boasts a marble patterned stone top, with black powder coated steel framing detail, and behind the counter are glossy porcelain tiles in a herringbone pattern. The attention to detail carries through to the kitchen in the far corner, which is framed by a black steel grid, with opaque acrylic panel backings. The Sea foam coloured leather banquets match the feature timber battens that run along the back wall.
The menu has also been carefully crafted, with all day breakfast options like the much loved smashed avocado on toast; Blackforest Brioche French Toast with Morello cherry jam, baked coconut, and hot chocolate sauce; and Baked Field mushrooms stuffed with caramelised onions and brioche sippets. The lunch menu offers house made Gnocchi with braised forest mushrooms, confit garlic, and cherry tomatoes; Sticky Pulled Pork and slaw; and the rather creative Softshell crab souvlaki with sweetcorn, lime aioli, and radish salsa.
Coffee is sourced from Zest, with a blend and rotating single beans for black coffee. Their African Mailman blend is made up of a washed Tanzania Kilimanjaro , Costa Rica Dota Tarrazu, and a natural Sumatra Wahana Estate Lot. It tastes like hazelnut spread, with toffee sweetness. The single origin of the day was a naturally processed Ethiopian Guji, and as a short black, had rich berry tones, with jammy marmalade notes.
Walkers Kitchen is open Monday to Friday, from 7am to 4pm.
