Even been to a café and felt like you’re visiting an old friend? Well that’s how a visit to Essendon’s latest café will have you feeling. There’s a familiar warmth at Rosem1lk, and it’s not just the summer sun flowing through the front window. Owners Harry and Rosie Tsiukardanis have put their heart into the venue, and you feel it the moment they greet you with their broad smiles. Harry has spent most of his life in Australia running Fitzroy’s Alpha Ouzeri restaurant, and as a chef at Philhellene in Moonee Ponds. Having worked decades late into the night, it was time for a change. When this corner spot became available, it seemed like the ideal location just around the corner from their home to start the next chapter of their lives. Choosing a coffee supplier wasn’t too difficult, considering Harry would drink his daily coffee at Campos’ Carlton Roastery. They supplied them with a sleek customised La Marzocco Linea PB, which fits right in with the décor.

The fit out is crisp and airy, with fresh white walls, polished floorboards, and Scandinavian style seating.

With Harry as a head chef, the kitchen dishes up some flavoursome Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean inspired meals. There’s the Baked spiced eggs with tomato sugo, roasted peppers, chorizo, and feta crumbs; Brioche French toast with pomegranate, pistachio, and rosewater syrup; Pork Belly with balsamic figs on toasted pumpkin bread; and the house cured salmon with orange crème fraiche, and apple and fennel salad. The specials menu changes regularly, and currently features an open crab omelette with caramelised fennel, enoki mushrooms, coriander and chili; and a fresh fig salad with spicy fetta puree.

Head barista, Karen works the custom La Marzocco Linea PB with flair, slinging shots made from Campos Coffees Superior blend. This house blend is made up of seasonal beans, and produces a solid cup, with smooth butterscotch notes. Black coffee and cold drip are made using single origin beans that rotate weekly, and this week’s offering is from Huila, Colombian. The Huila Del Monte AA is a washed lot grown between 1500 and 1900 meters above sea level. As a short black, it had a rich body, with toffee highlights.

Rosem1lk will be open over the Christmas break, so pull up a chair, and make yourself at home.

  1. I’ve tried this place a couple of times. The coffee has always been good. The food is a bit hit and miss. Today I ordered a cauliflower salad which wasn’t much more than 1.5 cup of salad (cauliflower, kale, quinoa, chickpeas with a bit of pomegranate and rhubarb) carefully arranged on a plate and it didn’t have the goats cheese in it as outlined in the menu. Was hopeful to keep this as my local go-to cafe. With any luck they are just having some teething problems!
