When I heard a new café named A Team opened in Watsonia last month, the first thing that went through my mind was Mr T, aka. Baracus, and his three former commando buddies that made up the popular “A-team” series I used to watch as a child. Once I dragged my mind back to reality, I soon realised this was the latest café offering to the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne, from husband and wife team Paul and Vanessa Parrella. Many will know their Rosanna café, Miss Marie, which has been operating since 2011. They’ve teamed up with Biasol, and produced an outstanding venue on Watsonia Road. The fit out is elegant, and full of life. There’s a pastel terracotta theme, with brass accents, and a marble top bar. There’s warm ambiance that extends down to the large dining area, which offers ample seating.
A stunning custom Synesso MVP sits atop the marble counter, next to three grinders, and pumps out both a house blend (Dark Horse) and rotating single origin coffee from Five Senses Coffee. It really is the A Team of coffee. The Dark Horse blend is composed of Colombian Popayan Cincuenta, Nicaraguan La Florencia, and Sumatran Tiga Raja beans; and delivers a full bodied cup, with sweet chocolate tones. The current single origin offering is the Indian Veer Attikan, which means valour and courage, in honour of the farmer who converted shrub land into a coffee estate. It’s a fitting coffee for a café named A-Team; and didn’t disappoint. My short black had a rich body, with chocolate malt notes.
The menu is as extensive as the kitchen itself, and offers something for everyone. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s the Ricotta hotcakes with blueberries, creamed passionfruit curd, and orange zest; while those who like their eggs can choose from the chilli scramble with Danish feta ; or the the A Team benedict with 12 hour beef brisket. There’s also a breakfast salad with French lentils and brown and wild rice; sweet potato and quinoa fritters with labneh and chimmi churri; and the double wagyu beef and bacon burger.
The A Team Kitchen has brought a slice of inner Melbourne’s café culture to Watsonia, and they have done it with style and flair. As Mr T would say, I pity the fool who doesn’t get out here for a visit.
