Two years. That’s how long it’s been since I was last at this café on the waterfront of the Docklands. While I’m on a quest to visit all the top well established coffee bars around town, I couldn’t overlook Hortus x Seven Seeds at Docklands. They brought coffee to this area at a time when no one dared too.
This wonderful glasshouse design is the result of a collaboration between Folk Architects, Lauren Berkowitz, and Utopian Slumps. Hortus being garden in Latin, inside you’ll find native plants, and an inundation of natural sunlight.
You’ll also find a La Marzocco Linea, and pour over gear to brew your daily cuppa Joe. Single origin beans rotate regularly for both filter and espresso coffee. Available when I visited, was the Guatemalan Santa Clara, a washed Caturra grown in Chimaltenango, Acatenango. As a pour over, it has a clean body, with red apple and honey tones.
If you’re feeling peckish, they have a small menu of quick eats, like pies, granola, bagels, and a pastries. Open daily from 7am until 4pm, you’ll find Hortus on Harbour Esplanade, just opposite Etihad Stadium.
