Five years. That’s how long this iconic coffee bar in Melbourne’s legal district has graced our city. Over the years, many feet have walked over the “standing room only” mosaic tiles, and a multitude of eyes have looked up at the “Sunshine” neon light. Bowen Holden named this venue after his grandmother, which speaks volumes about the man. I know how much I adore my nonna, and naming a café after her would be the height of respect. He worked hard to turn this former lawyer’s office into what it is today, especially when you consider the limited space he had to work with. It proves that when there is a will, there is always a way. Dream don’t take luck, they demand dedication, and belief; which Bowen obviously still has. You only need to see the line that snakes out the door on any given week day. People love the experience, and the fact that they serve coffee to match it, is a bonus. Patricia’s emblematic design sets it apart from every other cafe, and highlights the commitment to quality in every sense of the word. Designed by Foolscap Studio, it embraces the coffee culture Melbourne is famed for, and presents it with a touch of class. Its Standing Room only layout allows for a focus on perfecting the coffee that’s extracted through the Synesso. Brass features adorn the display area, and a marble top counter encases the coffee bar. You can even read the morning paper, which is pinned up on the wall. Speaking of coffee- Bowen, Pip, and their team of baristas take a methodical approach, which is what lies behind the consistency in quality. They roast their own beans at Bureaux Collective, and have guest beans from the likes of Small Batch, and Wood & Co. Today I enjoyed a Rwandan filter brew, which was super clean, and highlighted by sweet plum notes. I stood at the windowsill, with the sunshine streaming in and warming the ledge upon which I rest my cup. I watched at people flowed in and out, absorbing the atmosphere and caffeine, and was captivated by what I can only describe as Patricia’s inner soul. She’s gracious, yet simple; and worthy of all the praise that comes her way.
