Granger

“Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.”

It was only a matter of time before Nick Gardiner opened another café. I first met him back when he was a barista at Woodstock on High Street Armadale, which many of you will now know as MOBY. Nick then teamed up with Jessie Feldy to open Gardiner & Field, followed by Frank & Ginger. For the past year I have seen him on a Sunday morning at The Maling Room, pulling shots behind the La Marzocco Strada. Little did I realise, he was planning his next venture with wife Claire. They only just tied the knot 6 months ago, and have obviously put their heart and soul into this space.  Granger opened its doors today, and sits quaintly on Grange Road Caulfield East. Being a local, I couldn’t resist dropping in to see this fresh space. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt a sense of warm. It may have been the friendly smile on the waiters face, or the soft lighting…  or it may just have been the carefully curated interior by Kate Lee Designs that creates a homely feel. Granger has that ‘neighbourhood local’ vibe. The style features a pared back aesthetic, with natural elements and clean white features. A custom Synesso MVP espresso machine sits upon the natural stone countertop, which has been sourced from Cremorne’s Signorino Tiles. Large windows allow natural light to saturate the dining area, and the venue is dotted with potted cacti that complement the artwork on the wall from a local photographer.

A pair of Fiorenzato grinders are filled with 2 blends from Symmetry roasters- the Symmetry house blend for milk based coffee, and the Black Mamba for espressos. There’s also a Moccamaster for bottomless batch brews, and today’s single origin offering from Colombia. This particular Chili Bourbon varietal made for a sweet yet sparkling cup, with stone fruit and red apple tones.

The menu takes a “keep it simple, and do it well” theme. Breakfast is served all day, and ranges from winter warming Oat Porridge with caramelised banana & peanut butter; Twice cooked French Toast with vanilla bean custard; and Chilli Eggs with a pickled salad. Lunch includes Asian Style Chicken Soup; House made Gnocchi with braised mushrooms; and Colusari Rice and Lamb Salad.

You can find Granger at 49A Grange Road,  Caulfield East 3145
