St Martins

“Breakfast, lunch, and magic”. That’s what St Martins brings to Martin Street, Brighton. It’s the third café for Jim Marinis and his wife Mary-Jane Daffy, who also brought us Little Tommy Tucker in Bentleigh, and Glover Station in Elsternwick. Being located in the opulent beachside suburb of Brighton, St Martins takes a colourful approach, with bright umbrellas out front which reminded me of a summer’s day, and windows adorned with charming gold coloured branding-inspired by the Italian ornate lettering commonly found on espresso machines. Designed by Claire Laritt Evans, the stylish venue seats 90 inside and out, and is decorated with terrazzo flooring, potted greenery, and marble top counters. There’s a feature concrete block wall at the rear of the venue, along which runs upholstered bench seating in a royal blue, creating a touch of sophistication, coupled with a sense of strength.  A very striking feature of the venue is the open plan wash room, shielded by tall potted plants.

The menu has been crafted to emphasis locally sourced – seasonal ingredients, which are grown with love – free range and organically.

Breakfast offerings range from activated almond Bircher with tropical fruit & passionfruit curd; Slow braised beans with fennel broth, corn puree, mozzarella, and a poached egg; and Port Lincoln Sardines with confit lemon, capers, and fennel cream on toast.

Hearty lunch options include Semolina Gnocchi with a pumpkin puree and feta; Sticky beef rolls; Pork Schnitzel; and a selection of salads, sandwiches, and baguettes.

Coffee is sourced from Clark St Roasters, and all white coffee is made using their Mastermind Blend; which is best described as silky smooth, with white chocolate and praline notes. My long black was made from the ‘single origin beans’, which rotate weekly. Today’s offering was the Costa Rican Finca Tono, a honey processed Villa Sarchi varietal. It boasts stone fruit flavours, and a sweet finish.  Bottomless batch brew is also available, as well as cold filters, which are sure to be a crowd pleaser over summer.
