When George Nerouppos left his management role in the food industry, he was adamant about opening a café where people could meet and feel right at home. His wife Helen had one request- make it child/pram friendly, and large enough to cater for everyone. And so The Hub was born.
With the assistance of The Stylesmiths, George and his wife converted the once brown and yellow themed venue into a fresh open space with pale furnishings, high ceilings, and separate child friendly area at the rear of the building with a baby blue and brass themed lounge setting. A green wall feature adds a layer of nature to the venue’s large interior, and bi-fold windows usher in the sun’s warming rays.
The Hub lives up to its name, serving as a meeting point for locals and visitors, like myself, from the other side of the Yarra. The menu has a modern Australian theme, with a Cypriot twist that’s a nod to George’s heritage. There’s Grilled Mushroom Omelettes with goat’s cheese; Smashed Avocado on Brioche Sliders with pumpkin hummus and whipped basil spinach ricotta; Grilled Eggplant and Halloumi Focaccia; traditional Sheftalia plates; and Lamb Kleftiko (slow braised lamb with crispy potatoes, and feta).
Coffee is roasted by Ona in Canberra, with the ‘Founder Blend’ for milk based coffee, and rotating singles for black coffee. The Ethiopian Crimson Natural was in the hopper when I arrived, and I predictably had it as a short black. Being a naturally processed Yirgacheffe, my cup was filled with rich red fruit tones.
Since opening eight months ago, The Hub is well and truly part of the local community, and plans to open into the evening after the New Year.
